Renown Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie has won the coveted National Book Critics Circle Award – one of the most prestigious literary prizes in the US on Friday.
The award was presented to her at a function in Manhattan, USA.
The critically-acclaimed book, which was also selected as one of the 10 Best Books of 2013 by the editors of the New York Times Book Review, is a kind of romance novel about race relations in America from the point of view of a Nigerian transplant. It also highlights the lifestyle of the new Nigerian middle-class – mostly “post-democracy returnees” from the US and the UK.
The author who will premiere the screen adaption of her older book Half of A Yellow Sun in Nigeria and UK come April is already talking about making her newest hit 'Americanah' into a movie. She also hinted that at a future “collaboration” with Oscar winning Kenyan actress, Lupita Nyong’o.
She gave the tip during an interview on entertainment web-seried published on YouTube Thursday.
According to Adichie, the collaboration will have to do with her 2013 novel, Americanah.
“I’m going to do the mysterious thing and say that Lupita might be making an announcement sometime soon – I don’t know. That announcement might be about Americanah – I don’t know,” she said coyly.
Chimamanda disclosed that Nyong’o was a very early fan of Americanah. “Before she was sort of well-known like she is now (…) she wrote me the loveliest email; very long and passionate email about Americanah.”
Seeing Lupita play the lead female role 'Ifemelu' will be quite interesting considering that she's Kenyan. However I think it will also show her versatility as an actor, plus she does look the part. The announcement hasn't been officially made anyway, so we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed.
